Poetry, Realistic Fiction, and Science Fiction and Fantasy

What you already know about the topic

·      Without a doubt, poetry is always neglected. ·      Teachers don’t feel comfortable teaching it. ·      Some students enjoy writing poetry because there are no rules. ·      Most children think of poetry as always rhyming. ·      Realistic fiction stories are believable. ·      There are many different categories for science fiction.

· Children are very interested in the different sub genres under science fiction and tend to like the different series out there What you learned after completing the assignment

·      Children prefer reading narrative poems because they like stories.   ·      The most disliked poems are haiku and free verse.   ·      Most children love poems that are humorous and include animals or familiar experiences.   ·      Poems should provide visual images and words that allow children’s imagination to expand.   ·      They should create some kind of vision or imagery in some kind of way.   ·      Sound in a poem is very important. For example, alliteration or onomatopoeia.   ·      There are many awards given to poetry books. The NCTE award began in the 1970’s and is now given every year. ·      Share realistic fiction that avoids stereotypes. ·      Realistic fiction should be believable. ·      The theme of the story should emerge slowly. ·      Stories should relate to modern readers. ·      Criteria for evaluating Science Fiction and Fantasy include the characters behaving in a consistent way. ·      There must be rules for the fantasy world. ·      Science fiction books should explore universal truths. What you still need to learn ·      As a 4th. grade teacher, I follow the district frameworks for my classroom lessons. It is disappointing that we only cover it as a complete lesson once. How often should poetry be presented to children? ·      Is it recommended to incorporate poetry with core subjects? For example, the grammar poems that were introduced in one of the videos. ·      What do we do if students are not interested in poetry? How you will share this information ·      I will share all the information that I learned about poetry, realistic fiction, and science fiction and fantasy with my students by creating themed lessons. ·      Lessons will include different activities that will incorporate a variety of poems, not just narrative. ·      My coworkers will also be invited to experience these lessons with me since most of them don’t feel too comfortable teaching it. ·      I will also teach my students and coworkers to identify the different criteria that the different genres should have.
