Todd Hewitt lives
in a world where everyone can hear everyone else's thoughts. He lives in
Prentisstown with his dog Manchee where he is the only boy left. The rest of
the members are men because they had Todd believe that the Spacks spread a germ
that killed all the women and infected them with the "Noise" which is
why everyone can hear thoughts. Just before his birthday, Todd and his dog
Manchee came across an area of complete silence. At first Tod thinks that it
might be a Spackle but it turns out to be a girl. His guardian, Ben, tells him
to run for his life and gives him a book that belonged to his mother and a
knife. Through their travel to Haven, he develops a strong bond with his dog
Manchee and the girl with no noise named Viola. They also encounter many obstacles
along the way, and Todd battles with the idea that he might never be able to
kill and become a man. Once they get to Haven, things are not what they
expected. Viola gets fatally injured and Todd faces President Prentiss.
This book is part
of a trilogy and I’m now very interested in reading the others. This
fantasy/science fiction novel clearly demonstrates fantastic aspects (noise) and the characters
behaving in believable ways, which are the criteria for evaluating these kinds
of books.
