Summary: Mr. Michaux has a desire to open a book store but when he
goes to the bank for a business loan he's told that "Black people don't
read." They were willing to give it to him to sell fish and chips or fried
chicken. Nothing stopped him. He decided to wash windows and save every cent
that he earned to open his bookstore on his own. Mr. Michaux provided a place
for people to socialize and read books. Lewis' bookstore was a place that
brought the neighborhood together. Famous African-Americans including Muhammad
Ali and Malcolm X visit the bookstore as well.
Review: Students will really enjoy reading this book about the
National Memorial African Bookstore. The book exhibits the importance of
reading books, and that people from all cultures and backgrounds appreciate it.
Excellent illustrations that bring the book to life.
