Family Pictures

Garza, C. L. (2005). Family pictures = Cuadros de familia. San Francisco: Children’s Book Press.

Summary: Carmen Lopez Garza provides the reader with photographs of her Mexican family traditions. She explains her experiences growing up in Kingsville, Texas and shared a wide variety of the traditions and activities she participated in with her family and friends on each page. Recollections included Carmen sharing about going to the fair in Reynosa with her family, her grandmother killing a chicken for dinner, and her hitting a piñata during her sixth birthday party. Other loving memories she included were when they took a trip to Padre Island, made tamales, and even witnessed a quinceañera.

Review: This is a great bilingual book that takes you through a journey of beautiful Hispanic family pictures. The top portion of the book is written in English, and the bottom portion of the book is written in Spanish. It is wonderfully illustrated. It would be great to share this book with elementary children to show the value of family culture, relationships, and traditions.
