Summary: Cece Bell is a girl that loses her hearing at
a very young age due to meningitis. Because of this, she uses a hearing aid
that helps her hear everything around her, even things that she really doesn’t
want to hear. She feels very different than everyone else in her school because
her hearing aid is big and hangs from her neck. To help herself cope with this,
she uses her imagination to create a person named “El Deafo” and her hearing
aid is her superpower. She begins to be outgoing and makes new friends. She
even has a crush on a boy named Mike. At the end, Cece feels accepted and part
of the community.
Review: My
fourth grade students loved this book! I would read about ten minutes a day
right after lunch and they always wanted for me to keep going. It contains
beautiful illustrations, details and a great storyline. Wonderful novel to
teach students about acceptance of others that have special needs. Definitely
worth reading whether you're a kid or an adult.
