Summary: Momma, Dad, Byron, Joetta, and Kenny are the
Watsons family. They are all very different from each other. Byron, the eldest
son, is a bully that keeps on getting into teenage trouble and in result; the
family decides to take a trip to Birmingham, Alabama where their maternal
grandmother lives. They are planning to leave Byron there for the summer in
hope that his grandmother will shape him up. Kenny, who is just ten years old,
quickly realizes that life in Alabama is quite different than back home in
Flint, Michigan. Racism and inequality is something that is openly accepted. During
their visit, Joetta attends Sunday school and unexpectedly a bomb is set off
leaving several deaths. Everyone feared Joetta was one of them. This event
definitely changed their lives forever.
Review: This is a fascinating book to read when
studying the Civil Rights Movement. Middle school and high school students will
really enjoy the humorous novel that describes life in Alabama in 1963.
