Summary: A boy named Henry doesn’t even know his age
because slaves are not allowed to know their birthdays. After many years,
Henry’s master gave him to his son, and now works in a factory. He meets a girl
named Nancy and marries her. They have children and are a happy family until one
day they are sold and sadly Henry knows he will never see them again. He
decides to mail himself to a Philadelphia where there are no slaves. After a
long trip sitting in a box upside down, he arrives safely and is a re-born man.
Review: This is an amazing book that can be used
during Black History month. Children in third through fifth grade will really
enjoy the engaging true story and illustrations. One of my favorite books to
read to my students!
