MEDINA, M. (2018). MANGO,
ABUELA, AND ME. S.l.: LIVE OAK MEDIA.
Summary: Mia’s
abuela has left her sunny house with parrots and palm trees to live with Mia
and her parents in the city. Her house was simply too big for one person. Mia
soon finds out her grandmother can't read one of her favorite books because she
doesn't know English. The two of them spend time together in quietness, feeding
the birds and watching TV. Mia’s mother reminds her of how a classmate learned
to speak English and Mia starts to work to teach her abuela the new language.
They point at things and share the English and Spanish words. Mia labels items
around the house with their English names. However, everything they are doing
is not working very well. When Mia and her mother go to the pet store for
treats for her hamster, Mia sees a parrot that she knows her abuela will love.
Mango, the parrot, starts speaking, and helps Mia and her abuela bond and grow
closer as they learn each other's languages.
Review: This is such a sweet and lovely book, unquestionably, one of my favorites. I love how it celebrates families and new language learners. This book should be shared with any second language learner. It is a beautiful story about bridging cultures and maintaining our heritage.
